Alex Ferguson had a fairly undistinguished playing career, yet in management has ensured his name will never be forgotten. His time at Manchester United will be discussed later, but his real success began at Aberdeen in the 1980s. It is a challenge in itself to take on the two Glasgow Clubs, Rangers and Celtic, but to take on Europe and win was astonishing.

Aberdeen took 12,000 fans to Gothenburg to watch it play Real Madrid in the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983. Rangers had won this Cup the previous year, while Celtic won the European Cup itself in 1967.

Ferguson had been just 36 when he arrived from St. Mirren in 1978, and together with Archie Knox made a formidable partnership. Aberdeen won the League two years later and the Cup in 1982. In the quarter finals of the Cup Winners Cup after drawing 0 – 0 with Bayern Munich, Aberdeen won the home leg 3 – 2. In contrast, Watershei of Belgium in the Semis was an easy task.

Aberdeen led in the final through Eric Black before conceding a penalty and the equalizer. John Hewitt headed home in extra time, and the Cup was to return to Scotland.

It is worth remembering the team that played that night: Jim Leighton, John McMaster, Dug Rougvie, Willie Miller, Alex McLeish, Neale Cooper, Peter Weir, Gordon Strachan, Neil Simpson, Mark McGhee, Eric Black, Sub – John Hewitt.
